The Division of Protection is launching a digital pathology pilot program that will use AI mixed with augmented actuality microscopes to assist with most cancers detection. For the undertaking, the Protection Innovation Unit awarded a contract to Google Cloud to ship augmented actuality microscopes to DoD medical services and develop AI fashions to assist with most cancers detection.
The Predictive Well being undertaking is predicted to run for 2 years, with an preliminary rollout beginning at sure Protection Well being Company services and Veterans Affairs hospitals. The DoD’s Joint Synthetic Intelligence Heart will present funding and technical experience for the undertaking.
Google will use de-identified medical photos to coach the AI to determine cancers, utilizing open supply machine studying platform TensorFlow and its healthcare API. The fashions will use data from each private and non-private datasets.
Paired with the deliberate augmented actuality microscopes, the AI would overlay data to assist pathologists determine cells that is likely to be cancerous.
“To successfully deal with most cancers, velocity and accuracy are vital,” Google Cloud Vice President of World Public Sector Mike Daniels said in a news release. “We’re partnering with DIU to offer our machine studying and synthetic intelligence know-how to assist frontline healthcare practitioners study capabilities that may enhance the lives of our navy women and men and their households.”
The purpose can be to scale back errors in outpatient diagnoses, permitting for the detection and therapy of most cancers earlier.
If the preliminary rollout is a hit, they plan to develop the system extra broadly throughout the U.S. Army Well being System.
Earlier this yr, the DIU awarded a separate cybersecurity contract to Google Cloud. The group inside the DoD is tasked with accelerating the adoption of economic know-how all through the navy.
