Diabetes, often referred to as diabetes mellitus, is a long-term condition that causes high blood sugar levels. This occurs when there is insufficient insulin production and/or the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin. The most common symptoms include frequent urination, severe thirst and hunger, unusual weight gain or loss, fatigue, male sexual dysfunction, and tingling in the arms and legs.
Diabetes mellitus has various types:
- Type 1 diabetes, in which the body does not produce insulin.
- Type 2 diabetes, in which the body does not make enough insulin to function properly.
- There is also gestational diabetes which affects women during pregnancy.
