Diabetes, often referred to as diabetes mellitus, is a long-term condition that causes high blood sugar levels. This occurs when there is insufficient insulin production and/or the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin. The most common symptoms include frequent urination, severe thirst and hunger, unusual weight gain or loss, fatigue, male sexual dysfunction, and tingling in the arms and legs.

Diabetes mellitus has various types:

  • Type 1 diabetes, in which the body does not produce insulin.
  • Type 2 diabetes, in which the body does not make enough insulin to function properly.
  • There is also gestational diabetes which affects women during pregnancy.

Diabetes doesn’t make you eat boring or bland foods. There are lots of healthy and enjoyable foods out there that are less likely to raise blood sugar levels.

Here is a list of healthy local foods to enjoy on your diabetes menu:

Nigerian Soup: Vegetable Soup, Okra Soup, Edikan Ikong, Water Leaf Soup, Ogbono Soup, Egusi Soup, Afang Soup

Staple food (swallow): Wheatmeal fufu, Guinea corn fufu, unripe plantain fufu
