A 15-year-old girl, Veronica Kufre, is hospitalized after being hit by a stray bullet during a wedding ceremony at Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
She was admitted to the intensive care unit at Life Care Clinic, Udosen Uko Street, Uyo after it was reported that three hospitals refused to accept her.
The incident is known to have occurred in the Nsukara community near the main campus of Uyo University during a rush to drink and eat at the ceremony.
A source at the wedding party, requesting anonymity, told correspondents in Uyo, the state capital, on Saturday that the security official suspected of shooting the bullet was at the ceremony to maintain peace and security.
The source said the trouble started when “two security guards joined other guests to help themselves with the food, but unfortunately the gun was still in his hand when the sudden discharge took place, sending the couple and other guests around running to a safe place.
“But one of them hastily aimed the nozzle of the gun at the floor and took in the remaining bullets, but the fragments already hit the victim who was near the security guard.”
The source added, “At first we thought it was a regular shot that security personnel would fire at funerals, weddings and other ceremonies to keep the place alive, but it was discovered when the young girl passed out with a blood pool on the ground, we knew that the devil was working to kill the excitement.”
Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps Commander Abidemi Maekondunmi, who confirmed the incident in a text message to our correspondent in Uyo, said: “As soon as I received information about the incident, we immediately activated the system structure to check what had happened. Most importantly, the victim is currently in a very stable condition.
“Meanwhile, an in-depth investigation is ongoing.”
