A 57-year-old rape suspect, Sani Mohammed, died on Tuesday in a Magistrate Court in Yola, Adamawa state.
The late Sani, a butcher and a native of Wauru Jabbe in Yola south LGA , has been in Yola Prison for a year for alleged sexual abuse of a minor.
Our correspondent learned that the deceased was critically ill for about three weeks before going to court on Tuesday.
He was previously indicted by the Police Commissioner before Judge Jafet Basani on 24th August 2020 and was indicted before his death on 24th August 2021.
The defendant died in the courtroom while the trial was run by Hakim Basani.
The judge’s attention was drawn to the condition of the deceased, but before he could come out and issue the necessary orders, Sani collapsed and died.
Since then, the judge has declared the death of the man to Nigerian Correctional Services administrator from necessary action.
The body was then taken to the morgue by NCS officials.
